Watercolour & Pastels

Painting (Watercolours and Drawing, Oils & Acrylics)

Two art groups are run each Wednesday, with Watercolour painting and Drawing in the mornings and Oils and Acrylic in the afternoon. Our average attendance recently has been 7 at each session. Both groups enjoy the social atmosphere that prevails as well as appreciating the guidance they receive in class.

Last year a combined exhibition of both groups’ works was held at a joint gathering. This together with the light refreshments supplied proved to be very popular with all. Another exhibition will be held this year. Several of our planned activities coming up include a visit to the National Galley of Victoria on a weekend to view the current European Masters exhibition.

A series of group lessons and practical exercises have been initiated to broaden each class’s horizons and allow them to experience different styles of painting. Once we begin to get some warm weather we plan to hold on outdoor class for both groups .This should further expand everyone’s outlook.

Doris A Day:

A Contemporary Modernist Painter

Doris A Day was born on the 7th September 1919 in Miles, Queensland which makes her now an impressive 90 year old!!!!

At the age of 20, Doris began training as a nurse but instead of continuing her nursing career, she married John Day and started a family. She has two daughters and three sons and six grandchildren.

Doris first started painting about 35 years ago when she completed a 2 year certificate course in painting through Mervyn Moriety’s Australian Flying Art School at Kelvin Grove College of Advanced Education, Brisbane. She has not stopped painting since! Over the last 35 years, Doris has exhibited her work in numerous art shows and won many accolades and awards for her creative work.

Doris calls herself a ‘contemporary modernist painter’ and is constantly experimenting with painting using a wide range of different materials and styles.  “I love and appreciate nature and I try to visually express what I am feeling in my paintings. I am very creative and I feel my best work emerges when I experiment with creating unique and expressive images”

Doris also states that ‘painting is a wonderful form of self expression which is open to us all, old and young, women and men and I’m  proud to join other local artists…….in artistic endeavours”

U3A Melton Watercolour Group love Wednesday mornings with Doris. She is an inspiration to all of us with her love of painting and her quiet and beautiful presence.

We wish Doris a wonderful 90th Birthday with lots of warm wishes and love from all of us at U3A Melton!
